  • Snow day AGAIN!

Alas, day three of cabin fever.  The streets in my neighborhood are sheets of ice so although the main roads are passable, I can not safely get to them.

The good news is that I have been able to work remotely.  I was even able to get someone at the office to scan in more documents for me and email them to me so that I can (after this posting) continue to get work done.

I spent many years in Pennsylvania both as a child and as a college student.  One fond memory I have is fall.  In the fall my grandmother would get a preposterous supply of apples and make apple pies, apple dumplings and applesauce.  To this day, I will not purchase applesauce at any store.  The store version is cold, too sweet, has preservatives and is not lumpy.  I like my applesauce warm, I want to smell warm apples throughout the house.  Also home made, you keep a few lumps in it for good measure!

I think that snow days are good days to go through the fridge and be creative in the kitchen.  So I took out all three varieties of apples that I had and decided to warm the house with the smell of applesauce. (also because it tastes delicious and I would like a nice warm bowl of it later!)

I found my little apple peeling machine and sure enough, after about 15 years of service, it quit so I did it all the old fashioned way.  I even got my grandmothers piggy cutting board out for good measure.

The only things you add to good applesauce are apples, water (only a bit), sugar and nutmeg.  Some people add cinamon but I don’t.  Also some add a bit of lemon juice to keep the color but I don’t do that either.

Meanwhile, the dogs are even board during this storm.  No camp, they slide when they try to play outside and I am online all day.

Madison has been spying on the neighborhood from this bench below a window.  Every few hours she lets me know that some brave soul is walking down the street or about kids playing in the snow but otherwise, she is waiting just like the rest of us in Georgia to let the ice melt and get back to our routines.

Until then I look forward to the warm smell of apples this afternoon and perhaps another hot bath this evening!

    Be safe and stay warm!

  • I’ll combine your most recent two postings into perhaps one reply.

As if you were not busy enough already you could maybe even start off a new second career by shiping out a few of those food products.

BTW good pic of the pet. It is believed that most dogs only see in B&W, yet that also technically extends into both the UV range and also IR,  also somewhat motion based, and has better abilities to see in a geqter range of lighting conditions, yet… For the dog it most likeyl can’t tell the difference between the object that it is on top of and alo the shoes that you had on recently to the Rotary.

About the stove in the other pic; it is a combination gas and electric? It also would ppear as that type of countertop would not typically have come with the house, so it looks like a good choice.

  • Oh, snow week had some plus moments, such as being able to cook more.

I love my 1930′s bungalow however when I purchased it, it had not had a real renovation since say 1980 so I have been redoing every aspect of it over time.  The kitchen was one of the easiest renovations as I didn’t move any walls and simply refaced the cabinets.  I added the appliances, countertops, sink, backsplash, wine rack and lighting.  At one time the cabinets were painted orange.  Oh, frightening.  The stove is actually the only mistake I made.  It is electric and the reason for that is that it was a special order double oven. (too small to have two separate ovens).  That only came in electric and that damn stovetop is a really big PITA to keep clean!
Long long range I plan on raising the roof of the house and when I do that I will have to knock down at least one wall in the downstairs area to put a proper set of stairs leading to the upstairs.  When I do that, I may also take down the wall between the kitchen and the living room (as the stair wall is in the living room and make it a larger kitchen/living area.  That is way down the line.  For now, my small kitchen is nice. :)
Madison is a diva and actually will pose for me!  I do believe that she does approve of my leopard print shoes!  ;)

  • An impresive accomplishment so far and also an interesting expansion in plans to look forward to. Perhaps I really should have hired you to do the roofs throughout my property; and perhaps the architecture and even interior design.

My rural lot was simply an incredible find and even the neighbors are great – although they live quite the distance away. Think of it as rural riverfront property which also reaches well up into the mountains – even with it’s own spring. I was even able to have basically free reighn with house placement – which was essential with having a dual feed solar house.

But other than being a timberframe with almost all glass exterior and also no internal walls I would actually look forward to doing a completely newer version of it someday soon. Plus my place compared to the Ms. Candace project -my place would look quite boring

I also wouldn’t mind seeing more pics of the house – even pics of the kitchen lighting.

Sounds like Candace made an excellent living space with a lot of character. Also BTW is the office able to be equally decorated?
